A new vision for a sustainable home
It started out like many other projects. In the winter of 2008, Open Air Concepts was selected to transform their historic home into an ultra efficient green home. We suggested that the homeowner use the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system as a third party certifying agency.
The homeowner embraced the process. The challenge: restoring architectural authenticity, modernizing the living space, and constructing an advanced energy efficient building.
Open Air Concepts was able to successfully execute many of the unique, complex elements of this project, such as:
- Deconstruction and salvage of materials
- Re-use of original framing and sheathing
- No/low VOC finishes
- Remnant granite countertops
- Low flow fixtures and toilets
- 100% recycled dry wall
- Recycled paver system on driveway, side patio and roof top patio
- Underground dry wells to retain 90% or more of storm water runoff
- Click on this link so see the comprehensive list of sustainable elements completed on this home.
Now this home truly meets the functional needs and taste of the homeowners. The neighbors are delighted to gaze at a restored gem in their neighborhood. And the home uses significantly less energy and water, and is a healthy haven for this family.
